I spent some time today digging out a small flower bed in a spot near the sidewalk that had been filled with shrubbery that spreae beyond usefulness.

There were several kinds of shrubs, and due to the increasing shadiness of the spot, they had leaned farther and farther over the sidewalk.

The plan is to turn the soil, add some soil, set in something to keep the soil back from the sidewalk, and dig in some spring-flowering bulbs.
They will bloom before the trees leaf out and shade the spot. We will fill in the area with shade-tolerant plants like hosta or impatiens for after the bulbs have finished blooming.
