A N.Y. Times article says the U.S. Dept. of Transportation iknew of Some Elements of Hijack Plot in Advance . The Senate isn't blaming the DOT or the Airlines, though.
"We could not expect an $8-an- hour security screener to foil an attack that a multibillion-dollar intelligence system could not prevent," said Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington.

I guess I'd go along with that, but am troubled by the implication that a person's reliability is measured by their hourly wage.
