After Sept. 11, Complaints of Job Bias Mount Since Sept. 11, Arab-American groups say, hundreds of people have said they are experiencing discrimination in the workplace because of their nationality or religion. --NY Times

This has never been a tolerant country. Arab men become Arab-Americans only when they have first names like Ed or Bill instead of Mamdouh and their wives bare their hair and dress in Western style.

Maybe Americans are saying You have to show you accept us before we will accept you.

It is hard for foreigners to accept much of American culture even though the country has things to offer that they value sufficiently to stay here. So maybe the lack of tolerance is on both sides.

We seem to need time to get used to each other.
