Tin Man

I was just reading a weblog that I admire for its clean design and clear prose, the Tin Man. I especially enjoyed the Nov. 30, 2001, description of the view of New York City from the Rainbow Room.

I am not a New Yorker, but I have for years and years carried a torch for The City. I first went there as a child and saw the Statue of Liberty and the Automat. As an older child I saw the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA (Museum of modern Art) and the Guggenheim. I had an aunt who lived there and summered in Woodstock NY and visits to her in either place were magical.

I read the New Yorker magazine for years, especially the Goings On Around Town. I loved their artful descriptions of the mundane aspects of New York life.In college I had a friend who used to travel to the City routinely by train. I was SO envious. From an early age, I have viewed New York as the center of the universe. (When my mother, who lived in Boston for a while in her youth, told me it was referred to as "the Hub" I was condescendingly amused.)

So, this description of Central Park and what is seen to the left and right of it is better than any map I have yet to see, and carries an emotional weight due to what is Not There.
