Who cares if Congress is involved?Ashcroft Defends Antiterror Plan and Says Criticism May Aid Foes But do any members of this committee really believe that in this time of crisis, the American people, those who live outside the capital beltway, really care whether the president, the secretary of defense or the attorney general took the time to pick up the telephone and call us, prior to implementing these emergency measures? --Senator Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, defending the Administration against congressional oversight, quoted in the NYTimes The Administration's defenders are saying that because most Americans believe their government works (until they get an unremitting media assault on their senses telling them otherwise) that they are doing the right thing. Who cares if Congress is involved? Thomas Jefferson cares; former Sen. Fullbright cares (among many others); and I care. Speak up, Congress! we need our critics more than ever! Palema
