When I began this blog in 2001, I was appalled by President Bush's headlong rush to an illegal war (we were not in fact under attack). As time wore on and Bush began his assault on the Constitution and any people bold enough to criticize, I believed that "the republic is endangered more by actions of our own government than by those of any terrorist." With the election of a high-minded, compassionate, intelligent man like Barack Obama, my fears have ceased.

Ashcroft Defends Antiterror Plan and Says Criticism May Aid Foes But do any members of this committee really believe that in this time of crisis, the American people, those who live outside the capital beltway, really care whether the president, the secretary of defense or the attorney general took the time to pick up the telephone and call us, prior to implementing these emergency measures?

The Administration's defenders are saying that because most Americans believe their government works (until they get an unremitting media assault on their senses telling them otherwise) that they are doing the right thing.
Who cares if Congress is involved? Thomas Jefferson cares; former Sen. Fullbright cares (among many others); and I care.
Speak up, Congress! we need our critics more than ever!
