Call me a starry-eyed realist, but...[ack! the coment thingie doesn't work any more! Here are some comments on Kate's Feb. 12 posts] 1. Re: drug control and 'health security' : You ask if it's wishful thinking? I'd say so, definitely. I can tell youright off the top that this sentence President Bush will unveil his new National Drug Control Strategy, which sets clear and specific national goals for reducing drug use in America to save thousands of young lives. comes straight from the pen of a Bush flunkie. It is not news but pap. Therefore, it has no credibility (other than you can beliive the White House wants you to think it's true.) 2. Health Care proposals... On the White House page you cited , Bush suggests something like what unions all over have fought long and hard for, for example here in Connecticut for state employees - choice of coverages/providers at reasonable cost. If Bush is truly supporting this, either he is no longer a Republican and the tax break to the rich (the tax money that would have paid for this initiative) was a horrible mistake; or he's lying. Would he really lie outright like that? I guess most Americans don't believe he would or could. I think he lies every day -- and I'm not just talking about fudging or spin. I'm not talking about putting the best face on a major embarassment like the Enron scandal. I believe that proposal was put forth cynically and manipulatively in full knowledge the money would not be there, and counting on Congress not to put it through. Or planning to otherwise have it not happen. ('Oops sorry we need to fight another war'). For some examples of Bush's ongoing deceptive practices, see the interesting article Bush lies Palema
