Age-old scam: Men protecting women against menDo you recall how the mob used to move into a neighborhood and offer small businesses insurance? Those who didn't want to pay for the so-called protection would find robbings, muggings and arsons on the upswing, and eventually they would pay up. A man who protects his wife, girlfriend, sister or daughter from other men derives a benefit in the form of increased power over her. She has to follow his direction in order to gain the protection. Wouldn't you think this is what government ought to do, in the form of police power? But no, we don't have enough money to handle this sort of thing. So, ladies, get behind your man and stay there. We may think we are free to work, own property and run our own lives. But many of us live in fear. The same men who easily found billions for bombing Afghanistan cannot find a few million to protect the women of our country from every day crimes of sexual assault. The men in Congress are too busy, for the most part, to deal with this problem in any meaningful way. Now comes Sen. Hilary Rodham Clinton in the Senate and Rep. Jerrold Nadler in the House with legislation that will enable the thousands of DNA samples sitting on shelves across the country to get processed in a timely fashion and complete identification and prosecution of rapists.
