End of segregation

... the court refused to review a ruling by the Fourth Circuit last September that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District in North Carolina had effectively dismantled the vestiges of segregation and become "unitary." Under the ruling, race-based student assignments are to end for the next school year.

NY Times, 4/16/02.

Thirty-two years ago, the Supreme Court for the first time upheld busing as a remedy for school segregation in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. It may be that North Carolina residents are ready to assign students without reference to race, but frankly, I doubt it. These days the only people arguing for "color-blind" decision-making are those who want to be the only ones looking at color, while the rest of us pretend everything is fair and equal.
