When the utility truck is outside, pull down your shades

The president is now trying to recruit utility workers as government spies. In a program called Operation TIPS — for Terrorism Information and Prevention System — the administration plans to enlist truckers, letter carriers, ship captains and others in reporting suspicious activity to the authorities.

In a speech in Tennesee, Bush said:
If people see anything suspicious, utility workers, you ought to report it... This is a way to organize that which already happens in our communities on a daily basis, and a way to make the homeland more secure and more prepared.
[ NY TImes, 4/9/02 Bush pushes volunteerisim ]

It's a sinister sort of volunteerism, if you ask me. Of course, citizens reporting on each other is not new. It was done in Salem, Massachusetts, during the witch trials; it was done in Stalin's Russia; and it was done in Hitler's Germany. This is not a model we want to emulate. It is unAmerican.

People and governments of the world: I ask you to take note of the dangerous direction in which the U.S. is heading and put on the brakes. U.S. allies: just say NO to President Bush.
