When I began this blog in 2001, I was appalled by President Bush's headlong rush to an illegal war (we were not in fact under attack). As time wore on and Bush began his assault on the Constitution and any people bold enough to criticize, I believed that "the republic is endangered more by actions of our own government than by those of any terrorist." With the election of a high-minded, compassionate, intelligent man like Barack Obama, my fears have ceased.

Where is Raed ?
That blog is written by a man living in Baghdad and reporting on everyday life as constricted first by sanctions and now by war. The last post was Friday March 21, 2003. I hope he can keep posting.
There are many comments on this blog. In one lengthy section of comments on one of the posts, I saw a link to a photo of Shiite Muslim men in Lebanon cutting their heads with swords in an annual religious ritual that marks Ashoura, a commemmoration of the 7th century killing of their most revered saint, Imam Hussein.
I also came across a link to a Guardian-UK article explaining why Hussein has to be forcibly removed from outside.
Then there was the commercially focused remark:
Well, the mother of all surrenders starts next week. Don't smash up your great leader statues. They will get a good price on Ebay.

how could support democracy in Iraq become to mean (sic) bomb the hell out of Iraq? Why did it end up that democracy won’t happen unless we go thru war? Nobody minded an un-democratic Iraq for a very long time, now people have decided to bomb us to democracy? Well, thank you! how thoughtful.
