War costs and benefits

Pres. Bush announced the cost of a month's worth of war and six months' worth of post-operation clean-up yesterday, under pressure to put some sort of number into his budget. That was reported in the US press. What wasn't reported is the fact that VP Dick Cheney's company, Haliburton, is profiting imensely from this war. Their subsidiary Brown and Root has an open-ended contract with the DOD to build tent cities wherever the military goes.
The contract was justified as saving money for the us-- instead of having our forces do the work,as was typical in the past, the contractor hire local labor at a fraction of the cost.
The current contract in Kuwait began in September 2002 when Joyce Taylor of the U.S. Army Materiel Command's Program Management Office, arrived to supervise approximately 1,800 Brown and Root employees to set up tent cities that would provide accommodation for tens of thousands of soldiers and officials. Army officials working with Brown and Root say the collaboration is helping cut costs by hiring local labor at a fraction of regular Army salaries. --alternet, 3-23-03

Personally, I'd rather see that money going to our servicemen. Before long, our entire war will be subcontracted to third world workers (with American companies raking in the profits, of course.) There's more than money to be considered in this. The whole mercenary thing leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
