Who pays for what in Iraq?British PM Tony Blair plans to visit the US today to discuss repair of the Anglo-Euro rift, on the surface a laudable goal. There has been alarm in Europe over reports that the United States plans to bypass the United Nations in the reconstruction effort, setting up an all-American civilian administration and military command in Iraq, giving lucrative contracts only to American companies and excluding European Union --NY Times, 3-26-03The Euros want to cash in on the Iraq conquest too! Unreported is the alarm that *I* feel over the idea that the conquest of Iraq is being paid for by American taxpayers, but the rewards of it will be reaped by specific companies, not the US taxpayer. Taxation on any profiteers in Iraq should be very steep, to be equitable. But of course they won't -- Bush has already lowered their taxes to assure free profit. The families of those killed or maimed in Iraq should be given substantial shares in Brown&Root or Haliburton and other corporations that profit in the aftermath. But of course they won't -- they will be given a lump of metal with bits of ribbon attached and a heartfelt "Thank you!" Palema
