Tent City

Some students at the University of Connecticut erected a tent city on the grass down the hill from the Wilbur Cross building (the one with the gold dome). We got an email from one of our peace lists saying they needed a few things and could use some support. So we took a ride up there late this afternoon and took them a cooler, some rope, paper towels, candles, and drinking cups.
There seemed to be only four people in residence when we arrived - this was about 4 p.m. Sunday -- three young men and a young lady. Two of the guys had guitars they were strumming.

We were received amicably and they seemed pleased we brought them some stuff. We sat down and chatted with them and listened to some songs they'd written, somewhat in the style, I thought, of Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant.

One was composed of all the mean and nasty things passers-by yelled at them from car windows, with "You f***in' hippies" as a chorus. I was in stitches listening.

It was pretty cold up there, about 45 F, but a sharp nasty wind of the sort you 'd assosciate with early March or even February. After a while we had to go home.

They are talking about having a big rally April 15, a Tuesday, from 5-6 during prime drive time, and said they'd appreciate support from the Willimantic contingent. I told them I was sure *some* people would come, but mentioned they'd be competing with the 5-6 Willi vigil. (They had not heard it had been expanded to weekly, since the war started.)

Only after I got home did I consider the fact that on a weekday it's just about impossible to park at UConn. Drats.
