When I began this blog in 2001, I was appalled by President Bush's headlong rush to an illegal war (we were not in fact under attack). As time wore on and Bush began his assault on the Constitution and any people bold enough to criticize, I believed that "the republic is endangered more by actions of our own government than by those of any terrorist." With the election of a high-minded, compassionate, intelligent man like Barack Obama, my fears have ceased.

President Bush, pretending he didn't disgrace his uniform by being AWOL, put on a good show last night live from the USS Abraham Lincoln that many people would have trouble not tearing up over. Just to let you know, the man is deliberately tweaking your Hallmark gene. And you think I'm cynical.

After a dramatic landing on the compact deck — a new standard for high-risk presidential travel — Mr. Bush mingled with the ship's crew, then later welcomed home thousands of cheering sailors and aviators on the flight deck in a nationally televised address.
The scene will undoubtedly make for a potent campaign commercial next year.--NY Times editorial, 5-2-03
