One excuse after another; broken promises, lies revealed

It seems pretty clear that the Prez wanted to invade Iraq for his own reasons and used any excuse at hand to justify the attack. He did not use the excuse that SadamHussein is a bad character. That has been known a long time, including when the US considered him an ally and supplied him with weapons.

The White House faced new questions today about its assertions that Iraq posed a clear threat after Pentagon officials released a declassified version of a Defense Intelligence Agency study from September. The study suggested that at least some intelligence analysts were uncertain about the state of Iraq's weapons programs before the war. -- Bush Again Vows US Will Find Weapons of Mass Destruction, NY Times 6-11-03

Jeff Koopersmith writes:
During the course of a few months, the White House and its apparatchiks used the term "weapons of mass destruction" more than one thousand times in speeches, press conferences, and other published materials. They used the phrase so often that it became the butt of jokes, and a mighty irritant to almost everyone alive.
Yet these weapons have yet to appear.
Ms. Rice told us that "we've just begun" to look for them -- but don't I recall Colin Powell's show and tell on the floor of the United Nations where he displayed aerial photographs of the plants that manufactured these weapons?

The real but unspoken reason for the war was control of the economy of the Middle East. Saddam Hussein had moved from the dollar standard to the euro standard (possibly in a fit of pique at US sanctions). The US feared the rest of the OPEC countries might follow. Hence all the threats and posturing. Hence, in Sept. '01 the abrupt announcemnet the US would seek and destroy terrorists and their supporters.
For a thorough analysis of this see THE REAL REASONS FOR THE UPCOMING WAR IN IRAQ

This may be a good reason for a war. The fact that this was never offered suggests the Administration thought otherwise-- believed the American people would never agree to killing and dying to prop up the dollar's position in the middle east.
