Whale-killerOver at pacificwhale.org there is an Action Alert out because the US Navy, with the support of the Bush administration (of course) wants to use a long-distance submarine-detecting system that can prove very damaging to whales, dolphins, other marine creatures, and human divers, even a distances of 100-300 miles. Known as LFA sonar, or Low Frequency Active Sonar, the system works by emiting high energy, low frequency blasts of sound that can disorient or disable a scuba diver 100 miles away. I read about this in mail I received from the Natural Resources Defense Council, which filed a suit seeking to block the Navy from deploying the deadly system. For more information about the lawsuit, which was filed last fall and goes to trial this month, see the San Francisco Chronicle. The NRDC and the Humane Society say that "the sonar had the potential to harm virtually every species of marine mammal in the world. It could tear delicate tissues around the animals' brains and ears and interfere with migration and reproduction" Read what other environmental groups say about LFA Sonar: Defenders of Wildlife American Cetacean Society Greenpeace Humane Society Whale research by the Cornell Ornithology lab (Ornithology? if you figure that one out, let me know!) As usual, Bush doesn't care. He persuaded his doofus over at National Marine Fisheries Service to ok continued use of the ocean-blasters. They said in a press release last fall that," with proper monitoring and safeguards, marine mammals are unlikely to be injured by the sonar activities and ... the sonar will have no more than a negligible impact on marine mammal species and stocks."
