When I began this blog in 2001, I was appalled by President Bush's headlong rush to an illegal war (we were not in fact under attack). As time wore on and Bush began his assault on the Constitution and any people bold enough to criticize, I believed that "the republic is endangered more by actions of our own government than by those of any terrorist." With the election of a high-minded, compassionate, intelligent man like Barack Obama, my fears have ceased.

This is shocking. Though I've never lived in New York City, just visited there from time to time, I grew up in New York State and always thought of New York as ours, not just theirs. There is a hurly-burly, a tough spirit there that I love. Here's what the mayor had to say in the NY Times -- and it brought tears to my eyes:

'I've had some very tough days in my life and some tough days in City Hall, but I don't think I've ever had as tough a day in 61 years as today. Somebody who was an elected official in the city of New York has been killed, and they've been killed right here in City Hall.'
