The CT AIDS Bike Tour

Here's a good summary of the 350-mile, 5-day ride that ended 9-13-03:
Two AIDS Ride veterans were then inspired to start the first annual Connecticut AIDS Tour, which began on the thought-provoking day of September 11, 2002. Dan Livingston and Peggy Shorey had the idea for a Connecticut Bike Ride to benefit Connecticut AIDS organizations, and were joined by Merrilee Millstein, David Zevin, Rachel Donovan, Martha Dale and Liz Conklin for portions of the 350-mile tour which began and ended in Hartford making a huge ring around the state. What was unique about this fund-raising tour was that Dan and Peggy visited many AIDS agencies during the trek, talking with people who live with AIDS, and thus becoming inspired to continue the journey, while bringing attention to the agencies’ important work.

After Dan and Peggy arrived at Leeway in New Haven, on their second day, they had a spirited conversation with residents about the need to educate young people regarding the danger of AIDS, and the importance of prevention and testing. The CDC estimates that fully half of the people infected with HIV do not even know it.

The tour was also organized and supported every step of the way by Shawn Lang, Assistant Director of the CT AIDS Residence Coalition. Other organizers included Hartford Gay & Lesbian Health Collective, the CT Positive Action Coalition and the Outreach Services Program of Windham Regional Community Council.
