The Ganges: river of water to the people or river of cash to a corporationI read the following on a yahoo group list. It's disturbing, to say the least: I saw Bill Moyers interview a scholar from India. She was reporting the disasters that the WTO has created in India. In some parts of India, water from the Ghanges has been diverted to private enterprize....WTO private enterprize.....and now for miles and miles, where residents could formerly use the water supply from their own river, they now have to PAY for water that has been theirs for thousands of years. TO WHAT is the water being diverted ?????? A Coca-Cola plant.....down river........a brain child of the WTO. I was beside myself watching this program.....I give you only one example of many, too many examples shown on Bill Moyers NOW! The representative from India and Moyers talked at length about the various LOBBIES controlling the WTO. Suez, a private French company wants to privatize the Ganges River and sell the water to the people whose families lived on its banks and used the water for thousands of years. Read the transcript at PBS Incidentally, this is very similar to what happened during the early industrialization period when the commons was privatized and rents began to be charged for suing what once belonged to all.
