Rediscover our courageAll major improvements in society have required the courage of a few with a vision to get started. I just read about a new book, The Soul of Capitalism: Opening Paths to a Moral Economy, which promotes a vision of what we could become. Writing on the Tom Tomorrow blog ('This Modern World'), author William Greider says: Are we truly free when most Americans work in a "master-servant relationship" inherited from feudalism? If we are so wealthy as a nation (and we are), why are so many people confined and trampled in their lives, feeling desperate amid the abundance? And does our prosperity really require business and finance to wantonly destroy nature, not to mention families, communities, our deepest human values? Read more...--Author William Greider I haven't read this book yet, but I would like to. So many of us have a dream of a better functioning society and the book title speaks to that dream. We want a society that lets us be the kind of people we are at our best, the kind of people who live in our memories and imaginations-- healthy, well-fed, well-educated, well-housed and well-clothed; and generous, sincere, honest. This American, now largely imaginary, lives in the minds of foreigners too. The whole world wants him and her back again. Of course, throughout our history, some of our government at times and some of our people at times, have contradicted this image. We have never been perfect. Funny, many of our imperfections have come in the form of tighter security. We do better as a people not to live in fear, and not to let those who would have us live in fear dominate our politics. If this is to be the land of the free, it must also be the home of the brave. Palema
