Bye-bye shoppingThe day after Thanksgiving is the day by which retailers measure the success of the "Christmas Shopping Season." It is the day by which advertisers measure the success of their year-long hustle. Buy! Buy! BUY! BUY! Nov. 28 this year was designated as "Buy-Nothing Day" and we honored the request to do no shopping. Buy-Nothing Day is a response to the guilt trip that has been laid upon the American consumer if he (or more likely, she) fails to over-satiate the children with sweets and gewgaws, and to pick up a little something (at $10-$20 per) for every co-worker, neighbor, and acquaintance. The latter would simply give it to someone else next year anyway. And while we endorse the idea of recycling, buying something that no one wants is an advertisers dream and a human being's nightmare. That's why we may purchase a few little gifts for our nearest and dearest, but that's it. We do no expect their every whim will be satisfied by US. Others will have to be satisfied with a cheery seasonal greeting when we see each other around town. Palema
