Dean's World: No Child Left Behind

In a discussion of the merits of standarized tests imposed by the Bush administration, one Mark Noonan intoned:
Dean's World: No Child Left Behind: "Education is not a right - its a commodity; wise parents will ensure their kids get it, unwise parents will provide the future ditch-diggers of the world."

That remark encapsulates the difference between Bush Republicans and the rest of the country.

Education IS a right; in my state, it's listed in the Constitution. (Please recall that education is not mentioned in the US Constitution, becuase it is supposed to be a state function. Why is Bush pushing the states around on this issue?)

Furthermore, it's necessary in a democracy that everyone, even the children of those who can't or won't provide education, at the very least acquire the tools for acquiring knowledge such as reading, computer use, etc.
