Gov. Rowland

A while back, after Connecticut Gov.Rowland apologized to the media for lying about gifts received from employees and government contractors -- but not for taking the goodies-- I wondered if he realized that having lied about them points to the fact that he knew it was wrong, so it was useless to deny wrongdoing there.

Now he comes out with a new apology, this time for the deeds themselves, but still maintaining that the lies were worse than the deeds.

You know what? I think the deeds were worse than the lies. It's something parents say to their kids - what you did was bad, but even worse was that you lied to me about it!. In the real world, the crime is a crime. Lying is a crime only when you do it under oath, in court for instance. Lying to the police is covering your tracks.

Rowland has been spouting A.A. slogans -- Progress, not perfection and One day at a time -- as if they would buy his way into heaven. I heard an AA member refer to this and say (as reply) John? Keep coming back!. In other words, Rowland may apologize, but that doesn't take care of the problem.

The 19th Century moralist Henry Ward Beecher said:Repentance may begin instantly, but reformation often requires a sphere of years. You say you repent--now. Over the next several years we shall see whether you have changed your ways.

Rowland seems to me similar to the wife-beating husband who begs forgiveness and promises to change but never does. His wife has a heavy investment in their marriage so keeps forgiving him and keeping him on. This is different. We are not married to John Rowland and we have no children. We need not put up with this treatment. If we do, it will get worse.
