To Avoid Fuel Limits, Subaru Is Turning a Sedan Into a TruckTo Avoid Fuel Limits, Subaru Is Turning a Sedan Into a Truck: Light trucks now account for more than half of all passenger vehicles sold in the country, up from about a fifth in the late 1970's. It's all smoke and mirrors -- which some of you may recall is what candidate George H.W. Bush claimed about the economic proposals of candidate Ronald Reagan. You recall further that once Reagan gained the nomination and appointed Bush as his VP candidate, Bush shut up about smoke and mirrors and began supporting the program. The press asked him what changed his mind. He gave some sort of gobbledygook answer -- I forget the exact circumlocution now -- and that, ladies and gentlemen, was the last time the press questioned a Bush family member closely. So what does the Bush family have to do with Subarus' fuel economy? The Bush administration is responsible for letting gas economy standards slip and slide. For some 20 years we made good improvement in our regulations in regard to environmental cleanup. Republican and Democrat alike agreed to it. Who did not agree were the manufacturers who saw the regulations as a cut into their profits. Palema
