The Fat ConAmericans worry, with good reason, that we have become too big for our own good: that we consume too much, too quickly; that our cars, our houses, and our shopping malls are too large; that our imperial ambitions to make the world safe for democracy and McDonald's are too grand. Under these circumstances, obsessing about the 10lb of "extra" weight that the average American adult has gained over the past 15 years has become a convenient way of avoiding a more direct engagement with any number of issues regarding America's excesses. -- excerpt at the Guardian of Paul Campos The Obesity Myth Campos argues that most research on obesity is funded by the very concerns that have an interest in heightening our concern about weight. Not only is there a conflict of interests, but they do not adequately make their case, he says. The evidence spotty, he says, or incorrectly interpreted that being overweight causes many diseases; but those who argue in favor of dieting miss the fact that what advantages of thinness exist accrue to the naturally thin more often than to those who achieved thinness. They fail to notice that the diesease affecting the overweight affect them far more frequently and seriously when they lost weight and regained it than their brethren who remained overweight. The health benefits come from eating a healthy diet and getting adequate exercise (1/2 hour 4-5 times a week). So, quit dieting America, and just try to eat healthy... That means plenty of fruit and vegetables, some eggs and fish, and hardly any meat. Don't park so close to your destination when you drive somewhere -- instead of complaining about the extra block or two to walk, be grateful for it. Quit looking for labor saving devices Palema
