A lousy president, R.I.P.

"He was a lousy president, but he would have made a great king." --Possibly said by Tip O'Neil and quoted by WrigleyWiggly at plastic.com

They called him "The Great Communicator, a man who touched the hearts of all Americans."

Not mine. And furthermore, I don't agree that he was a great communicator. Communication requires substance and even more, it requires honesty. Reagan was a liar. Reagan broke the law. Reagan twisted words; freedom fighters, my foot! The Iran-Contra matter was touched upon lightly in obituaries I've read tonight, but although it is referred to as a 'scandal,' there was no impeachment (there should have been , given that the President is duty-bound to uphold the law and Reagan deliberately undertook action in suppport of the Nicaraguan Contras after it was barred by Congress. They gave him a pass.

It's my view that his acting ability -- good enough only for Grade B movies in Hollywood amongst excellent actors -- in the world of politics stood him in very good stead. Once while he was speaking and drew out one of his typical Hallmark examples, wife Nancy pulled out her hanky and dabbed at a tear right on cue. I was reminded that she, too was an actor.

I'm glad he's gone, but, not to speak ill of the dead, I'm not any more glad now than I was when he left the White House.
