The Big Apple

The GOP Convention is this week in New York City, an awkward choice made because of its camera and symbolism opportunities, but a potential problem as one ofthe most liberal locations in the country and apt to be full of demonstrators.

Word is they are hoping for violence among the demonstrators, to set off their calm, responsible demeanor in the face of problems.

Repubs plan to present themselves as moderates and thus have selected some of the less rabid conservatives to speak. Says the New York Times today:

Mr. McCain and Mr. Giuliani were chosen to speak in prime time as part of an orchestrated effort by the party to present its most moderate leaders to the widest possible audience.

Democrats scoffed at that effort as a cosmetic makeover.

"The other party is about to convene here, putting its once-every-four-years compassionate face on,'' former President Bill Clinton said in a morning speech at Riverside Church, one of the city's more liberal congregations. "When they go back to Washington, it's a different deal, run by right-wing Southerners in the House and the Senate and lobbying groups and their allies in the White House."

I truly hope that US voters don't fall for that again. Compassionate conservatism, indeed! We have become more poor since Bush took over and the economy is in worse shape.

People, we've got to keep an eye on this administration, and you can't do it by watching the biased and unbalanced Fox News.
