We can do better

The United States can do far better than we are under the current Administration, which uses tactics similar to those of an abusive husband to keep us from freeing ourselves - isolation, threats, fear, punishment for anything deemed 'disloyal.'

The Democratic Party says:
For the last four years, ordinary Americans watched as the policies of George W. Bush have made their lives harder. They've seen massive job losses. They've seen stagnant wages and skyrocketing health care costs. They've seen the administration attack civil liberties, environmental protections, and even overtime pay.

The attack on civil liberties is the most threatening, in my view. Making us isolated from former allies is like the methods of a battering husband. Torture -- someone in the Bush administration doesn't mind going to the extreme of torturing prisoners, and there was little outcry from Bush. A normal man would have been appalled; I am inclined to believe he sanctioned prisoner torture. First it's 'them' -- next it may well be us.

Bush keeps us from partaking in the community life of the world by failing to participate meaningfully in environmental agreements. He takes actions that can lead to impoverishing much of the nation, while leaving a select few wealthy beyond all reason -- the exact divide between rich andpoor that Thomas Jefferson warned against. And worst of all, Bush seems not to care about these harms and potential harms. He has another agenda that is hidden from our view, which apparently concerns gratifying his personal wants and those of his buddies.
