Debate II: My impressionsI was impressed with Vice President Dick Cheney. He stands head and shoulders above George W. Bush, who comes across as a snivelling, bratty kid Cheney, by contrast, seems like a grown-up, one who has considerable years of experience and a great deal of knowledge to draw upon. I find it hard to believe he looks at himself in the morning without feeling a little sick to his stomach on account of who he works for. That, of course, is if he works for Dubya, who may simply be the figurehead of a cartel that must include Cheney, much as Reagan was a figurehead who was adept at reading his lines. Cheney had a rather human moment when John Edwards complimented him on his family, acknowledging Cheney's diference with Bush over the position and acceptancve of gay people. Rather than respond to Edwards' statements on gay marriage, cheney just thanked him. Edwards, on the other hand, shone on the stump while seeking the nomination but now seems a little chastened and tethered to Kerry views which he may not have endorsed previously. I was disappointed in Edwards' statement that he and Kerry both believe "marriage must be (only) for a man and a woman." I think that anyone who believes that ought to push for marriage to be removed entirely from the civil realm and left firmly in the hands of religion. Marriage, as far as the State is concerned, ought to be nothing more than Contract law. The church should govern marriage and the State should govern civil unions between any two people, whether they be lovers, close friends, or relatives. The word "marriage" should be stricken from the books and replaced with "civil union." Anyway, the Republians lost Round IIDespite the above, Cheney did not manage to save Bush's gaffes and lapses last week -- he merely made him look worse by contrast. Bush is a whiner, and Cheney is not. But Cheney persists in linking the invasion of Iraq to 9-11 even though there was no connection. To suggest there is, is a lie. More later... Palema
