When I began this blog in 2001, I was appalled by President Bush's headlong rush to an illegal war (we were not in fact under attack). As time wore on and Bush began his assault on the Constitution and any people bold enough to criticize, I believed that "the republic is endangered more by actions of our own government than by those of any terrorist." With the election of a high-minded, compassionate, intelligent man like Barack Obama, my fears have ceased.

Hats off to the Freeway Blogger of Los angeles. He posts anti-war and anti-Bush signs, atop roadway signs and on overpasses. They get taken down, of course, but for the 20 minutes or so they remain in place, are seen by thousands of Californian commuters. He keeps a photo record on his website, and accepts pictures taken by others around thc ountry of their own efforts to inform (and often amuse) people.
Most of all, given the enormous, unprecedented efforts of this administration to keep adverse news out of circulation and to punish whistleblowers and objectors, these are acts of courage.
