The Social Security 'reform'Price tag? what price tag?President Bush announced Thursday that he has ruled out a rise in payroll taxes to pay for his proposed overhaul of the Social Security system. Coupled with earlier promises that there will be no reduction in benefits, some are wondering exactly how Bush plans to pay for the overhaul, which has an estimated price tag of $2 trillion. [ AirAmerica Radio, 12-13-04 ] Maybe Bush engages in magical thinking around the whole cost thing, because in his experience, you never need to have the money to pay for something you want. Either Daddy gets it for you, or one of his friends provides. It would be tempting to say to oneself, 'Ask and ye shall receive.' and consider that god is looking out for you. God doesn't buy baseball teams for the poor and powerless (george W.). God doesn't get Congress to cover your losses when your bank fails (brother Neil), espcially if you're poor and powerless.
