When I began this blog in 2001, I was appalled by President Bush's headlong rush to an illegal war (we were not in fact under attack). As time wore on and Bush began his assault on the Constitution and any people bold enough to criticize, I believed that "the republic is endangered more by actions of our own government than by those of any terrorist." With the election of a high-minded, compassionate, intelligent man like Barack Obama, my fears have ceased.

As usual, the very thing that can save us is what will be shut down to intecerp terrorist activity. I do not presume to make judgement here, but this dichotomy stays right in line with freedom issues that have been addressed since 9/11. What do you think of this plan? --Kate
Welcome to Technology Review: "WASHINGTON (AP) -- President George W. Bush has ordered plans for temporarily disabling the U.S. network of global positioning satellites during a national crisis to prevent terrorists from using the navigational technology, the White House said.
Any shutdown of the network inside the United States would come under only the most remarkable circumstances, said a Bush administration official who spoke to a small group of reporters Wednesday at the White House on condition of anonymity.
The GPS system is vital to commercial aviation and marine shipping."
