How we are

The agents of greed and war seem to drum into us that it is human nature to be self-seeking, competitive and violent if necessary to attain our ends. They deny the existence of altruism.

Yet, despite their claims, altruism leaps out. When disaster strikes and a community is in need of help, help pours out from all over (everywhre but thefederalgovernment, that is).

My local Red Cross, like chapters all over the country, issued a call for relief volunteers and a promise of a stepped-up quick training course.

People are donating their time, their money and their best wishes. The Democratic National Chairman, Gov. Howard Dean, issued a call for volunteers and donations to the Red Cross.

The President issued a statement urging people to follow instructions and assured them they were in our thoughts and prayers. Like the Iraq War, hurricane relief is "hard work."
The federal, state and local governments are working side-by-side to do all we can to help people get back on their feet, and we have got a lot of work to do.

Bush really has no empathy. While others weep at the sight of such misery and destruction, and answer the call to help, Bush issues a statement (prepared by someone else) and goes back to whatever he was doing.
