Talk to Cindy Sheehan, Mr. Bush!

You might think the President of this powerhouse of a country, which calls itself a democracy, could spare a few moments to go out to the end of his driveway and chat with Gold Star mother Cindy Sheehan, who has been waiting there for days.

I see that Lance Armstrong will be visiting the Southwestern White House this week -- maybe while he and the president are out on their mountain bikes they could just tool on down the driveway for a few words with Cindy, whose son, Casey, 24, was killed in Sadr City, Iraq, on April 4, 2004.

As a friend wrote to me from Europe:
I think it would have been cooler if Mr. Bush had walked down the yard and talked to Cindy Sheehan . . .
You approve, You don't approve - that is not the point. A few steps down the yard is not too much to ask of anybody. As somebody bitterly remarked, neither of Laura's daughters are coming home in a casket. You can imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth. It is saddening that a US President cannot stoop to meet one his own people.

Of course, Bush has a really lo-o-o-ng driveway down there in Texas (on purpose so he does not have to deal with the riffraff who may pass by on the public road).

Tonight, there will be candlelight vigils around the country in support of Ms. Sheehan. To see if one is planned in your area, see the MoveOn organizing page. Just type in your zipcode and how many miles you're willing to travel to join a vigil.
