Tracking the rightwing lie about a Bush critic

Cindy Sheehan did not change her story
Cindy Sheehan, mother of a soldier killed in Iraq last April, has drawn significant media attention for staging an anti-war protest outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, where she is demanding to meet with the president. On August 8, Internet gossip Matt Drudge posted an item on his website, the Drudge Report, in which he falsely claimed that Sheehan 'dramatically changed her account' of a meeting she had with Bush in June 2004

The Media Matters website tracks the permutation of one unsubstantiated assertion into a full-fledge "news" item on Fox News (aka Faux News).

The facts are these:
  • Cindy Sheehan's son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, died in Iraq: true.

  • Cindy Sheehan and other "GoldStar" parents met with Pres. Bush in April, 2004 and an account was published in Sheehan's hometown newspaper, The Reporter of Vacaville, CA : true.

  • Sheehan was not satisfied with Bush's performance at that meeting, but was gratified to meet with other parents who lost sons and daughters in Iraq: true.

  • Matt Drudge lifted a quote out of context, taking a remark made about thetrip itself and appalying it to themeeting with Bush specifically and then accused her of changing her position: apparently true.
