When I began this blog in 2001, I was appalled by President Bush's headlong rush to an illegal war (we were not in fact under attack). As time wore on and Bush began his assault on the Constitution and any people bold enough to criticize, I believed that "the republic is endangered more by actions of our own government than by those of any terrorist." With the election of a high-minded, compassionate, intelligent man like Barack Obama, my fears have ceased.

One of the most surprising things about the metamorphosis of George W. Bush into the son that LBJ never had is how big of a break it marks with the Rovian political play book to date: Not because Bush is proposing to spend a whole fuckload of other people's money (that's been the operative strategy since 9/11) but because he's actually bragging about it, instead of pretending not to notice.
Bush: Deficit? Oh, that deficit.
Even worse, at least from the point of view of your average freeper (or bow-tied conservative pundit) Bush is promising to spend large amounts of federal cash to help those people, instead of pouring into a hole in the desert, or donating it to large corporations, or giving aid and comfort to all those deserving white people out there struggling to keep gas in their SUVs.
