Not promising in Europe

A travelling friend sends the following note:

The flower of Old Europe's spin-doctors and political strategists are now working on the fallout of a pandemic. Chicken-flu, as it happens, this time around.

The guiding principal is that the Ruling Classes must survive. They will. You may have heard of various vaccinations, treatment, medications, and care. Well, there is not enough to go round.

Some people in feudal Europe think that it is ripe for yet another war. A pandemic is much less costly, and a pandemic can be pinned on God. Never mind that it was foreseeable. The unpreparedness can be blamed on the Americans and globalisation - Old Europe always blames you know who. At the very least, Somebody Else. A pandemic would be the answer to an unspoken prayer.

The advantages of a plague in Europe are manifold. All the pension debts get wiped out. Chronic unemployment is solved. Health services will see their load, and costs, alleviated : the dead do not require medication of any sort. Schools, hi-ways, and public transport will no longer be over-crowded. No worries for Telecoms and such : they will adjust their prices.

Should there be risk of public disorder, the police and military will be held in check by being guaranteed inoculation and health care for them and their families. That should ensure they obey any orders.

On the whole, you can be sure that protection and care will be extended to United Nations personnel : Koffi Annan and his extended family, relations and acquaintances. Similarly, European Union Commissioners, EU Deputies, their families and such will be afforded protection. And such-like institutions, government, and industry people. Well, that about uses up all the serious capacities. You might get issued with a paper mask, if you are lucky. Good Luck to You, Friend.

-Big M.

P.S. Next time you get your obligatory Health Care charges, if you are still there, you might query where the money goes. The response. if there is one, is sure to be extraordinary.
