When loyalty is not a plusI'm happy to see the rest of the world catching up to me on the Miers issue. My initial reaction to her appointment was that if her prime qualification was loyalty to Bush, then she is NOT qualfied -- the very closeness disqualiafies her. Today, theNew York Times has a story about documents released from Texas archives that demonstrate the close ties between Bush and his nominee for the Supreme Court, harriet Miers. The documents, including many minutes of meetings of the Texas Lottery Commission, which Ms. Miers headed, shed little light on her legal thinking, but underscore her ties to Mr. Bush. Because of their closeness and her lack of a judicial record, some critics have dismissed Ms. Miers as a crony unworthy of nomination to the court but for her confidential service as the president's lawyer.More...
