Even the phrase 'family values' is a lieOkay, kiddies, watch out when the so-called Family Values folks come knocking on your state legislature's door. E.J. Graff, writing for TomPaine.com ["The Family Values Sideshow"], provides evidence of a bait-and-switch tactic to undermine even the meager rights now held by gay and lesbian couples. ...Here’s what they’ll tell you when they’re trying to persuade voters to pass a one-man-one-woman marriage amendment: The amendment will merely put velvet ropes around the word “marriage.” It won’t be mean; it won’t deprive lesbian and gay couples of job benefits; it won’t close the door to other protections for same-sex couples and their families. But once the amendment passes, those same proponents will shout that any recognition whatsoever of a same-sex couple is an incursion into that sacred territory, marriage. According to me (as a friend of mine used to say), "family values" is about love and caring and sharing; about tolerance, forgiveness, and brotherhood; about pulling for the less fortunate. Most of us have little trouble understanding that, even if our particular family falls a little short of that. But if you're going to apply the notion of family values to the community, then those of us with more advantages ought to be looking out for those with less good fortune. We should accept the differences among us and enjoy our commonalities. Palema
