May 1 rallies

I was at the May 1 rally of immigrants in my town here in eastern Connecticut and it was a joyous occasion.
It wasn't all immigrants -- German, Ukranian, Polish, French and Irish immigrants, or their children, who are a significant part of our local population were missing-- but rather (mostly) people from central and South America -- and to a great extent, Puerto Ricans who are of course, American citizens and not immigrants -- but who are often treated with the same scorn as undocumented workers from Spanish-speaking countries by white people.

Father Paul from Iglesia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús spoke and prayed; Juan, a former member of the Board of Selectmen spoke and exhorted; and Yolanda, also a former selectman, spoke briefly and introduced a Democratic congressional candidate running against the Republican incumbent, who also spoke sympathetically a few minutes.

All the Spanish speakers kindly gave an English version of their remarks as well as the Spanish one.

[I have to interupt this writing for a bit, but on my return hope to expound a little on my views on the 'immigration question.']
