War on liberals raises big bucksI read in the Hartford Courant today that the Liberty Counsel, a Right-thinking law firm, took in a third of a million this year on the sale of "Help Save Christmas Action Packs." Likewise, the American Family Association has raised over half a million dollars in the bogus "response" to an alleged liberal plot to stamp out Christmas. I say bogus because the last Americans who actually tried to stamp out Christmas were 17th Century colonial Puritans, and they didn't approve of all the carousing that Christmas entailed in Royalist England. Apparently some of the sympathizers are boycotting stores whose clerks wish them a happy holiday instead of forthrightly saying "Merry Christmas." They seem to feel that a clerk's or a store's effort to be inclusive somehow dilutes or even negates their ability to celebrate Christmas as they wish. I wonder that it has not occurred to them to fight against the real war on Christmas, the War machine. The anti-Christmas message I've been hearing is Buy More Stuff; and the subsidiary message, to send some of it to Iraq to "support our troops." Supporting our troops is a message the Administration likes since most people can't distinguish that from supporting our war; and because the feds are too busy supporting their business friends with war contracts to spend very much in support of the troops-- especially after they finally come home. Let's face it: Everything about Christmas these days, other than what many people carry in their hearts, is about making money -- by the retailers, the warmongers, and the 'Liberal Plot' mongers.
